I was super lucky to go to the most recent cinema club screening at Videology in Brooklyn. They showed a bunch of killer videos, but the one that stood out the most was Big Black Delta’s ‘Side of the Road’. I remember seeing Tron Legacy (2010) and losing my fucking mind about it. This video somehow feels like a natural continuation of that vibe. The awesome digital freak outs made me feel like a kid getting excited about the future.
The video came out a while ago now, but having only just seen it, it feels as fresh as ever. It doesn’t hurt that the song is super great and the dance moves old spice pulls off fit the mood perfectly.
I was going to research this band and talk a little about where they are from and their records and so forth, but I think it’s better to approach this video the way I did – unsuspecting and cold as fuck. It’s times like that, in my opinion, that makes something really stand out. It sticks in your skull for a long time. When you watch something in a crowded screening room and everyone is into it, it feels like a special time.
It’s always rad when bands you are unfamiliar with turn out a clip like this. I think it’s testament to music videos being important. If I’d heard this song I would have liked it, but the music video made sure I wasn’t forgetting it anytime soon.
