Spirited away.

hayao miyazaki

Hayao Miyazaki isn’t just a titan of the animation industry, he’s one of the finest filmmakers of all time, animation or otherwise. That’s not exaggeration. If you think it is then that’s what’s called a difference of opinion, and that’s just fine and dandy by us. But opinions aside, ya’ll be trippin’ if you can’t concede that the big fella has a lot going on in his noggin, creativity-wise. In fact, Miyazaki is so top notch that trying to come up with a film of his that isn’t an absolute banger is a bit of a problem. If you’ve gone done made Spirited AwayPorco RossoPrincess Mononoke and My Neighbour Totoro to your name, you’d think that’d be enough, but Miyazaki’s list of whizzpoppers goes on far longer than that.

Because a good video essay is informative and entertaining, and this video essay is a good video essay, we’re proud to share “Hayao Miyazaki – The Essence of Humanity”, from the YouTube channel Channel Criswell.

The video does a wonderful job at conveying exactly what it is that sets Miyazaki from the rest of the pack to make him as special as he is. As it turns out, it’s quite a lot. For a very digestible but still informative insight into the wonderful work of Miyazaki, look no further.
