Terrence Malick has always had a bit of an affinity for fire and water, and it’s not hard to see why considering his work delves so deeply into themes of religion and philosophy. It’s not much of a stretch to conclude that water and fire might be the filmmaker’s representation of heaven and hell. Malick is a divisive filmmaker. Some of us at ReelGood love his films. Others think that The Tree of Life is nice-looking crap. Vimeo user extraordinaire kogonada has compiled a beautiful insight into Malick’s obsession with the two elements. Because Malick’s films are nothing if not beautiful.
